As Prime magic users, Catalina Baylor and her sisters have extraordinary powers—powers their ruthless grandmother would love to control. Catalina can earn her family some protection working as deputy to the Warden of Texas, overseeing breaches of magic law in the state, but that has risks as well. When House Baylor is under attack and monsters haunt her every step, Catalina is forced to rely on handsome, dangerous Alessandro Sagredo, the Prime who crushed her heart.

The nightmare that Alessandro has fought since childhood has come roaring back to life, but now Catalina is under threat. Not even his lifelong quest for revenge will stop him from keeping her safe, even if every battle could be his last. Because Catalina won’t rest until she stops the use of the illicit, power-granting serum that’s tearing their world apart.

Review

I fell in love with this series after reading its first book, and 6 books after (including the novella), I’m still in love. Emerald Blaze was just as wonderful as what I anticipated. I think the only thing that I didn’t anticipate is the extreme action this story provided. The other books were extreme, but this one, I have to say that this husband-and-wife team outdid themselves.

It gave us extreme action, but the extreme didn’t just stop there. The characters here were also extreme, especially the women. I love how this series highlights how badass the women are regardless of their age. Both the mom and the grandmothers in this series were kickass and I really appreciate that. The previous books had that, but I failed to fully appreciate it until now.

Speaking of badass women, Catalina shines more brightly in this book. In the Sapphire Flames, even though she was already stronger than she was before, she still has this deep insecurities about her power, but now in this book, I can’t see that old Catalina anymore. She’s more sure of herself here. I think it was because there’s no more time for her to doubt herself as she’s been dealing with a lot of things already. Heck, these Baylor ladies sure are born to be a badass.

As for Alessandro, I really like him – well, who wouldn’t?! But the thing I like most about him is his way of flirting with Catalina. I’m not sure if it’s only for me, but I really find his flirting amusing to read. Like every time I am reading it, it always leaves a smile on my face. But ofcourse we should never forget how he left Catalina 6 months ago and broke her heart. It was really disappointing, but I can’t totally hate the guy. Then when I found out about his full story, uwaaaahh, I wanted to cry. It was just heartbreaking. No wonder he admires Catalina’s family on how much they love each other.

Another thing I like about this book is the appearance of Nevada and Connor, finally! We didn’t get the chance to read about them in the previous book, so I was really really happy to read them here and the addition of Mad Rogan junior. (Sorry for the spoiler, hehehe)

And lastly, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the part where Catalina and Alessandro finally became a thing. Our ship finally sailed!!!! I just love how emotional it was, I’m just so happy for them both.

Overall, Emerald Blaze gave me everything I wanted, so I don’t think I have to hold back on giving it a 5-star rating. After that ending, I CAN’T really wait to read what’s next.

Believe it or not, I still have to try any of Ilona Andrews’ books . . . and yes, I know I’ll just have to at some point! It seems like every blogger I know is in love with Andrew’s series, and that is probably what sparks my curiosity the most! So happy to know you are having such a great time with them as well, Vanessa 😀
