As the sole assistant to a famous upscale interior designer, Lane Harmon is accustomed to visiting opulent homes. So her latest job at a modest New Jersey townhouse is unusual. Then she learns the home belongs to the wife of disgraced finance magnate Parker Bennett, who vanished two years earlier, along with the five billion dollar hedge fund he managed.
The debate over whether Bennett was suicidal or staged his disappearance still continues. Both his clients and the federal government want to trace the money and find him. But Lane is surprisingly moved by Mrs. Bennett’s steadfast faith in her husband’s innocence. Gradually, Lane is also drawn to the Bennetts’ son, Eric, who is equally determined to prove his father is not guilty. What she doesn’t realize is the closer she gets to the notorious family, the more her life—and that of her five-year-old daughter—is in jeopardy.
Review
This is going to be one of those short reviews, which I think frequently happens after my two months hiatus, haay.
I love Mary Higgins Clark, her books comprises most of the space in my bookshelf and this book, The Memory Lingers On been sitting idle there since forever. I’m in the process of cleaning my shelf and seeing that I am in the mood for another suspense story, I decided to go for this one.
This story is quite different from Mary Higgins Clark’s usual stories. For this one, there’s no murder scene that needs to be solve but the mystery is still there so is the suspense. I didn’t like it instantly but I was still glad that I decided to pursue this book because it was still something. I’m not sure how to describe it but it sure got my attention. It wasn’t one of her best books but I still enjoyed it overall.
Just like her usual stories, this one introduces quite a lot of characters so it’s quite hard to really uncover the mystery. Also, I’ve found some inconsistencies too but in all fairness, it didn’t totally destroy my overall reading experience.
And speaking of characters, I usually love MHC’s heroine, but for this one, I actually don’t like her (but I don’t hate her either). It’s just that, it’s just hard to like Lane. Yes she’s a terrific mom but I just didn’t like how she handles romance, which actually made me despise the romance in this story. I am a big fan of MHC’s romance but for this story, I just didn’t like it unfortunately.
Despite those issues, I still think that The Memory Lingers On is still a pretty interesting read. So if you’re looking for a book to spice up your mood minus that heavy feeling, this one might be a good choice.
