Spontaneous Human Combustion: a chaotic phenomenon that has plagued humanity for years, randomly transforming ordinary people into flaming, violent creatures known as Infernals. While Infernals make up the first-generation accounts of Human Combustion, the second and third generations became known as pyrokinetics—people gifted with the ability to manipulate and control their flames while remaining human. To combat the Infernal threat and discover the cause, the Tokyo Armed Forces, Fire Defense Agency, and Holy Church of Sol produced their answer: the Special Fire Force.

Young and eager third-generation pyrokinetic Shinra Kusakabe, nicknamed Devil’s Footprints for his explosive ability to ignite his feet at will, becomes a member of the lively Special Fire Force Company 8. Upholding the brigade’s duty to extinguish the blazing Infernals and lay their souls to rest, Shinra is determined to become a hero who will save the lives of those threatened by the flame terror.

However, this is not the hero’s game Shinra imagined. The Fire Force is a fractured mess of feuding brigades, abnormal Infernal sightings are increasing all over Tokyo, and a shadowy group is claiming to have answers to the strange fire that caused the death of Shinra’s family 12 years ago. Faced with many obstacles within and outside the Fire Force, Shinra fights to uncover the truth behind the burning mysteries that have kept him in the dark.

S1 Sypnosis

I can still clearly remember how I liked this anime instantly after watching the first episode of season 1 last year. (I only discovered it last year too, hahaha) So when I found out that there’s season 2, I know I’ve got to watch it. But, I wasn’t able to watch it sooner, wahahaha.

Opening & Ending Themes + Song

I liked both the opening and ending themes of this anime both season 1 and 2. I don’t think I ever hated one before though. For season one, I noticed that both of its opening themes gave me “the bomb” feel to it, which is kind of accurate because this series definitely gave me that. As for the second season, it was still pretty cool and the animation is still top notch. But whenever I think of this anime, I can strongly remember how I liked the opening themes of season 1.

As for the ending theme, all of them are pretty simple yet very cute, especially the ending themes for season 2.

And for the song, I absolutely love all of them, especially the opening. I just feel like they really suit the series – FIERY.

Plot

I actually didn’t read the synopsis of this one when I decided to watch it. It’s one of the current popular watches on Netflix so I decided to give it a go. Seeing the cover, I really thought it’s going to be just a normal (and boring) fire fighter anime series, but I was wrong. It was a very “fiery” watch, and I mean it literally.

In this series, we’ve got to see people who are afraid of dying by fire. And I’m not saying fire because of burned houses or buildings, but people combusting. In this series, there’s 4 generations:

  • 1st generation – or Infernals are people who suddenly combusts and doesn’t have a will of their own
  • 2nd generation – are individuals who are able to manipulate fire
  • 3rd generation – on the contrary, is able to produce fire
  • 4th generation – or hybrids who can both manipulate and produce fire

Season 1 was able to lay the groundwork on what this series is all about and introduced the main character pretty well. So well that I had to give the first season a rating of 9 out of 10. I just love how intense it was early on and was pretty consistent all throughout season 1. I also love the connection of the church and fighting. It’s actually giving me that vampire vibe considering that there’s no vampire here lol.

Season 2 on the other hand is more mellow for my taste. Don’t get me wrong, it was still a pretty exciting watch and there’s still a lot of action here. I guess the element of surprise is wearing off? Nah, I think it’s just because I didn’t get to see how cool Benny is here, wahahaha, sucker lol. One thing I also like in season 2 is the backstory of the other members of squad 8, so we’ve got to really know more about them here and relate to them.

And oops, I almost forgot wahahaha. I really really love how season 2 started. The first season has both action and humor. Dang! I love how they were able to incorporate that sexy calendar thingy in here like what normal firefighters do. You’ve got to see how buff these firefighters are without those bulky uniforms, wahahaha.

Overall, I really think Fire Force has a really great potential and I can’t wait to see more.

Characters

Shinra is a pretty decent character, although the way he smiles is cringey, wahahaha. His strong conviction to help people and defeat the devil to avenge his mother and younger brother is nothing new. Almost all main characters in anime are like that but his ability to control fire in both of his feet is quite impressive. I also like seeing his interaction with all squad 8 members.

As for the other characters, the Fire Force series has a really impressive set of characters that are unique in their own way. So I’m sure you will find one or more characters to relate to. There were also a lot of cool characters that I’m sure will make you enjoy the series even more!

I don’t really have anything bad to say in this aspect of anime. Animation is really good and crisp even on some intense fighting scenes. I actually think it delivers well and it sure gave me that “fiery” feel while watching this series.

The characters’ designs were pretty impressive too, although I’m just not a big fan of the shark-like teeth of Shinra, lol. But I really really love how the eyes were drawn here. I think that’s what added extra charm to the characters.

Voice Actors

I don’t think I need to say more about the original (Japanese) dub because it was superb as always and it was pretty consistent on both seasons.

The English dub on the other hand is ok, but it could be better. There were some characters that sounded so cringey but I think you’ll get used to it eventually. Not one of my favorites English dubs, but still watchable I guess.

***

I personally loved season 1 compared to season 2, but I think it was still a pretty interesting watch. I’ll definitely be watching the next season, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be really intense after that ending. Crossing my fingers, hoping that they will be creating a third season.
