Fourteen-year-old Iruma Suzuki has been unfortunate all his life, having to work to earn money for his irresponsible parents despite being underage. One day, he finds out that his parents sold him to the demon Sullivan. However, Iruma’s worries about what will become of him are soon relieved, for Sullivan merely wants a grandchild, pampering him and making him attend the demon school Babyls.

At first, Iruma tries to keep a low profile in fear of his peers discovering that he is human. Unfortunately, this ends up being more difficult than he expected. It turns out that Sullivan himself is the chairman of the school, and everyone expects him to become the next Demon King!

Iruma immediately finds himself in an outrageous situation when he has to chant a forbidden spell in front of the entire school. With this, Iruma instantly earns a reputation he does not want. Even so, he is bound to be roped into more bizarre circumstances.

Review

I remember watching and enjoying this anime while it was still airing so I was really surprised that I didn’t have a review posted in here yet! It turns out that I was still on hiatus at that time, lol. But it was really a shame not to share this anime to the world because it’s pretty entertaining!

That said, I decided to rewatch this anime so I could hopefully provide a somewhat acceptable review, lol. Please read along!

Opening & Ending Themes + Songs

I have to say that I absolutely love both the opening and ending themes! I love that it was colorful and features distinct characters that makes me look forward to meeting them. I absolutely love the song too, everytime it plays, I always find myself singing along. I love that it was so catchy which suits the opening theme really well.

The ending on the other hand looks gorgeous! It only features all the lovely ladies in the anime so of course it has to be gorgeous lol. And just like the opening, I love the ending song as well! It’s somewhat simple compared to that catchy and bright opening, but it’s still a beautiful song!

Story

Just like what the title says, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is a story of Iruma, a human who suddenly finds himself living in the demon world and even attending a demon school named Babylis! Sounds pretty straightforward eh? Iruma was sold off by his good for nothing parents to a demon named Sullivan who in return treated him like a beloved grandson.

Sullivan provided him with all the things that he needs and wants! He also doesn’t need to work! What he only needs to do is to go to school and enjoy his student life without thinking about how to provide for himself. He was actually pretty unfortunate and pitiful in the human world. This contrast is pretty ironic, lol.

Although his life in the demon world is way better than in the human world, he was still obviously pretty scared so he was determined not to stand out at school because he will definitely be eaten if they found out that he’s human! But surprise surprise, he still stands out, lol. It was really funny seeing him standing out just by doing the things he usually does in the human world, lol. Because of his hard life in the human world, he’s very good at dodging which is pretty useful in his life in the demon world, wahahaha.

Since this is only the first season, there’s no heavy scenes yet. It is more on world building and character introduction. There was 1 thrilling scene in which Iruma ended up saving the whole school (sorry for the spoiler), so with that, it gave me the idea on what to expect in the next season, *wink. That said,  I believe that this season is pretty light and more on the comedy rather than what we usually expect in a series with netherworld as the setting. I usually love my fantasy anime to have lots of fights and thrilling scenes, but surprisingly I don’t look for that in this anime. It’s just pretty interesting the way it is.

By the way, I absolutely love the mini story after the ending. It was short but very worthwhile. It’s usually related to the episode partnered with an extra cute art. I love it!

Characters

Like most fantasy series, this one has a number of characters too, so aside from the main character, I would also like to mention some pretty interesting supporting characters.

Iruma Suzuki

He’s a very unfortunate and pitiful character because of his good for nothing parents. He started working at a young age to support himself. It was really sad seeing all the things he needs to endure everytime it was brought out in each episode. With such a hard life most people would eventually succumb and start doing bad things, but Iruma never did such a thing. He still remained a kind kid.

Also because of that hard life, he ended up being a pushover. He’s a kind of person who can’t say no especially if they said please so it’s no wonder why he always ended up being taken advantage of. But his life changed drastically once he lived in the demon world. It was really entertaining seeing him working hard not to stand out, lol.

Alice Asmodeus

Appearance wise, he’s very catchy. Not to mention, he’s Asmodeus! Contrary to what I expected, he was pretty tough and powerful. I thought he’s going to be a flirt, lol. I love how this popular student became Iruma’s dedicated underling/friend, always on the sideline supporting his “master”.

Clara Valac

For someone with such a scary lastname, she’s the exact opposite, hahaha. She’s a very loud and eccentric character. She’s usually very lively and noisy which can be pretty annoying sometimes, but she grew on me, lol. After learning her story, I eventually learned to love her character. She’s usually pretty dumb, but when it comes to Iruma, she’s always there supporting him.

Sullivan

He’s usually a very silly character especially when he is doting on Iruma, but once he’s serious, he is really scary. He’s actually one of the tallest characters in this anime, but he’s usually shown in a very short and goofy design in the show because he’s always acting cute and doting in front of Iruma. Heck, I was even surprised to know that he’s one of the three most powerful demons in the netherworld! He just doesn’t look llike it because he’s always goofy, wahahaha.

Opera

He is a servant who works under Sullivan. That said, we usually see him taking care of Iruma. He looks pretty serious too so I thought at first that he’s going to be pretty cold to Iruma. I love that he is also pretty savage too, especially to Sullivan, wahahaha.

Kalego Naberius

He reminds me so much of Snape in Harry Potter. He’s short tempered and originally hates Iruma. I thought he’s going to be unreasonable, but he’s suprisingly not. He just hates easygoing demons. But despite his character, he was pretty funny lol. You really need to see Iruma’s familiar, wahahaha.

Amelia Azazel

She’s Babylis’ student council president. Contrary to her tough look, she’s a pretty cute character. I really love how Iruma befriended her and together ended up enjoying manga.

That’s only a few and there’s more supporting characters that also made this anime entertaining. I love that it’s so easy to get familiar with them because there’s some dedicated episodes/scenes introducing them. I can’t wait to know more of them in the next season!

Art

Considering that it has a pretty dark setting, the art looks surprisingly vibrant and colorful! I thought it’s going to have bold and dark art so I was pleasantly surprised. The character design and backdrop looks pretty amazing too. I definitely have no complaints in this department, *wink.

Voice Actors

I first watched this anime in subbed, and I totally enjoyed it. I don’t think I ever met an anime that I hated the Japanese voice actors. As for the English dub, I actually rewatched this anime in that dub! It was quite awkward at first, but that didn’t last long because overall it’s not cringy to listen to. I feel like this is one of those few lists of anime that has a pretty good dub!

***

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun definitely ranks high in my list in this kind of anime. I honestly enjoyed all the puns and banter plus the art and animation looks wonderful. And with that premise for the next season, I can’t wait but feel excited!
