The Mandarin House, a kitschy B&B on Jeju island. Lured in by an ad featuring a hot guy, first-timer Yeonwoo is a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed 23 year old that has come to work here, looking for a little fun and excitement over the summer.

The hot guy in the photo? Tae-hoon, your classic tsundere. Hard(body) on the outside, but you know he’s got that soft, gooey interior that just needs to be coaxed out. But things aren’t all soju and sun in paradise. Insatiable front desk manager, Hyun-soo, wants to get to know the newbie too. Soon, Yeonwoo is smack dab in the middle of a love triangle he had never anticipated. This is no reality show! Who will find love, who will get over the past and who will just get their rocks off this summer in “Love in Kitsch”?

Review

It’s been quite a while since I read yaoi, so I was pretty excited when I started this story. Love in Kitsch is just a short read but I think that it’s just the perfect length for me. Plus the setting is in Jeju Island so this manhwa screams summer for me, *wink.

Love in Kitsch started with the introduction of Yeonwoo who has come to work in Jeju Island after seeing Tae-hoon’s photo online. He just went there to have a little fun and excitement over the summer, so who would have thought that it will change his life forever.

Yeonwoo was a very amusing character, lol. His first interaction with Tae-hoon was cringey,  funny and it gave me a massive second hand embarrassment. I find it amusing how imaginative he can be, lol. Tae-hoon on the other hand looks quite tough to crack, so I was surprised to see that he was also affected by Yeonwoo’s “charm”, lol. I love that their love story didn’t give me a hard time to read, because there were no annoying conflicts. The cover screams love triangle, so I thought at first that there’s going to be a drama, but I’m glad we didn’t have that for this couple.

The only thing that stressed me out reading this manhwa was the second couple. Unlike the main couple, this couple screams toxic drama. I didn’t appreciate how this couple is messing up the main couple, but I’m glad that didn’t affect the latter that much.

It’s just a short read but I like the way it gave us short but enough information for each couple. It was short, yes, but it was enough for me to understand each character, especially the second couple. I was annoyed but it gave me an idea why they are like that. Despite everything, I’m glad both couples have their own happy ending.

And lastly, I really like this manhwa’s art. It looks very bright which is perfect for its setting, plus it gives me what I want in my yaoi – hot and attractive characters, wahahaha.

This story may not be one of my favorites, but overall it was still a fun read. Highly recommended if you are looking for a hot summer yaoi read!
