Boys don’t keep diaries—or do they?

The launch of an exciting and innovatively illustrated new series narrated by an unforgettable kid every family can relate to

It’s a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you’re ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.

In book one of this debut series, Greg is happy to have Rowley, his sidekick, along for the ride. But when Rowley’s star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend’s newfound popularity to his own advantage, kicking off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion.

Author/illustrator Jeff Kinney recalls the growing pains of school life and introduces a new kind of hero who epitomizes the challenges of being a kid. As Greg says in his diary, “Just don’t expect me to be all ‘Dear Diary’ this and ‘Dear Diary’ that.” Luckily for us, what Greg Heffley says he won’t do and what he actually does are two very different things.

Review

This is going to be a very short review but I figured I need to post it here in the blog since it’s probably my first time reading a children’s book like this one, *wink.

No one really recommended this book to me but I saw it on a coffee shop I visited waaay back and I thought the title sounds interesting plus the cover looks really cute. I was only planning on getting just 1 copy but I remembered it was on sale and thinking that it may not happen again, I decided to buy 5 copies which have been sitting idle in my tbr list for a very long time now lol.

So yep, I finally decided to give this one a try and my! I was sure not expecting the format of this book. It somewhat resembles your ordinary journal with the lines and all the whole time I was reading this book. It felt like I was reading someone else’s younger brother’s silly diary. And I have to say it was really cute because of the added illustrations, now I can see why the cover looks like that, *wink.

As you can tell from its title, this book is a diary from a wimpy kid named Jeff which entails all his daily adventures…sometimes misadventures. Although not all jokes got me, I have to say that this book is still a mine of good jokes. Man! You can really tell that this Jeff kid is having a “fun” childhood.

Diary of a Wimpy kid is just a very short read and you can absolutely finish it in just one sitting. After an emotional read, this book was definitely a good breather for me. And also, as expected, this one’s very easy to read and if I happen to have a younger brother, I would definitely make him read this.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable read for me. It’s still the first book in the series so for now, I am giving this one a 3-stars rating. If you’re short in time but in need of a good laugh, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is something you may want to try.
