There are a few unusual things about Cafe Goyo. Number one, their coffee sucks. Number two, their customers never order off the menu. And number three, Yohan, the cafe manager, is deaf. So when Soohwa joins as a part-timer, though he is not expected to learn how to make good coffee, he is asked to expand his sign language vocabulary beyond the words, “higher,” “pay,” and “please.” But when Yohan offers to give him private lessons, Soohwa is reluctant. Not because he doesn’t want to study, but because he has a “hard” time around Yohan. Like, literally. He gets hard. Whenever he hears Yohan’s deep, sexy voice.
Review
I tried this manhwa a few weeks ago, but after reading 2-3 chapters, I decided to drop it. To be honest, I wasn’t really thinking of picking it up again but I keep seeing this story as one of the top yaoi recommendations so I caved in. And oh boyyy, I’m so glad that I did.
Unlike the yaoi that I’ve been reading and following lately, the romance here was quite slow. The illustration looks good too, but I judged the main characters poorly so early in the story, hehehe sorry. I’ll talk more about the characters later below, *wink.
Sign by Ker I think is the longest manhwa I’ve read so far with a total of 115 chapters and are cut into three seasons/parts.
- First part – introduction of characters and the romance
- Second part – conflict
- Third part – talks about the past with an added chapters for the side characters’ romance. It also shows the progress of Yohan and Soohwa’s relationship as well as their life together.
Contrary to what my first thought of this story when I first started it, I now appreciated the slow build-up of the main characters’ relationship. I liked that the story didn’t start instantly on the romance part, but it tackled Yohan’s disability first and how Soohwa reacted to it. I also like the part where they finally realized that they like each other, their reaction is just really cute. Actually, the whole vibe of this story is really cute (except on the bed scenes because they’re HOT HOT HOT, hahaha) which is really a relief, since I’ve just realized that most of the yaoi I’ve been reading lately has been pretty dark, hahaha.
The second part of this story really irritated me. I really hate the crazy antagonist (you’ll find out soon enough if you decide to read this hehehe). But in all fairness, atleast it didn’t drag on the 3rd part. However, I just think that all of those heartaches could have been avoided if the two people involved were able to meet halfway. It also didn’t help that the mother had to tolerate his son’s wrong doings. But then again, even how nice a person is, what was done is just so hard to forgive that easily.
I absolutely love the third part – I really enjoyed seeing the romance of the side characters (too cute for words). Aside from that, it also talked about the past, finally answering all of my questions. And ofcourse, I love seeing the progress of Yohan and Soohwa’s relationship, it’s just so beautiful <3
Pheew, I think I’ve already talked alot about the story eh? Hahaha. Now let’s talk about the characters. There’s only a handful of characters here so they are very easy to track, however memorizing their names is a real challenge hahaha. All characters here are pretty unique and although there were characters here that started to be an enemy, I’m happy to say that they ended up as friends in the end (well, almost hahaha, I still don’t like the “crazy” guy).
For the main characters, I’m happy to say that I learned to love them the longer I read. I’m not very fond of the character design at first though, but I also learned to appreciate it as I read further. I don’t think I have something that I hate about them. When I think about Yohan, all I could feel is admiration. After all that he’s been through, I’m glad that he didn’t become bitter and just continue living his life. So reading about him and Soohwa being happy together, also makes me happy. As for Soohwa, all I could say is that he’s a very amusing character, hahaha. It took me quite a while to see, but seeing the two of them together is just really cute.
Now that I’m thinking about it, out of the previous yaoi manhwa that I’ve finished, this story is by far the most detailed when it comes to its characters. I mean, every character (main and those side characters that matters) has been properly introduced here so it really feels that I know them personally and I really like that.
And that ending left me so hopeful. I can’t think of any other ending for this story better that, *wink.
Of all those wonderful things I’ve mentioned above, why only 4.5 stars? I’m not sure either, I think I’ll hold on to the remaining .5 star for now, and will update this once I’ve known what’s missing for me.
