In the distant past, a war between humans and demons brought about widespread chaos and bloodshed. To put an end to this seemingly endless conflict, Demon King Anos Voldigoad willingly sacrificed his life, hoping to be reborn in a peaceful future.
In preparation for their king’s return, the demon race created the Demon King Academy, an elite institution tasked with determining Anos’ identity when he reawakens. He reincarnates two millennia later, but to his surprise, he soon learns that the level of magic in the world has drastically waned during his absence. Moreover, when he enrolls at the academy to reclaim his rightful title, he finds out that demonkind remembers him differently. His personality, his deeds, and even his legacy are all falsified—masked beneath the name of an impostor. This “lack” of common knowledge renders him the academy’s outlier—a misfit never before seen in history.
Despite these drawbacks, Anos remains unfazed. As he sets out to uncover those altering his glorious past, he takes it upon himself to make his descendants recognize that their ruler has finally returned.
I discovered this anime accidentally on facebook, and I really think it was hilarious. And obviously, I am open to the possibility of watching this series. So imagine my surprise that I will be watching it sooner than expected, wahahaha.
I’ve been interested in reincarnation and isekai lately, so when I read the summary of this one, I decided to give it a try and see if I will like the first episode enough to finish the whole season since it’s only 13 episodes long. And as you can see, I did, *wink.
Just like my other reviews, I am going to break up my thoughts through the following points:
(WARNING: I might drop some spoilers below, so read on your own risk, *wink)
OPENING & ENDING THEMES + SONGS
I absolutely love the opening scene, there’s just something about the main lead sitting in a throne that excites you, ya know? hahaha.
I’m actually not very picky in this aspect of the anime. Opening and ending themes only get my full attention if the art is really cute or very beautiful, OR if the song is very catchy. And as for this one, I think it got my attention not on the 2 points I’ve pointed above, but because of the story it is trying to tell. Well, almost all openings are like that, so why is this one different? I actually don’t know either, hehehe sorry. The song is not bad either, and I think it suits the opening.
Usually, the ending theme is not as grand as the opening, and as for this one, it’s simple but I love the added sitting on the throne scene hahaha. So you could say it’s matchy-matchy with its opening lol. The song is good also, which is a bit mellow for my taste.
STORY
This is a story of Demon King Anos Voldigoad, who was reincarnated after 2,000 years only to find out that the demonkind remembers him differently. His personality, his deeds, and even his legacy are all falsified—masked beneath the name of an impostor. This “lack” of common knowledge renders him the academy’s outlier—a misfit never before seen in history.
When you see the first episode, I’m sure some of you may find it ridiculous or hilarious. Just thinking about it still makes me laugh, hahaha, really. But don’t get me wrong, I am laughing but not in a bad way, hahaha. It’s just kind of funny seeing a newly born baby turned into a grown man after just a month, like literally! But I think it wasn’t just because of that, I also find the reaction of his parents amusing, hahaha.
Seeing that the main character, Anos, is the real demon king, he is exponentially strong. So I thought this is going to be boring because there’s no challenge at all, but it was still surprisingly exciting seeing his adventure as he sets out to uncover the person behind the alteration of his glorious past.
It wasn’t as intense as the other mainstream shounen anime out there, but this anime isn’t that bad at all. I actually think some action scenes were cool, until I am on the singing part. Wahahaha, sorry, the singing wasn’t bad, but I just didn’t expect a singing aspect to be added to the battle scene. It was awkward for me, but I got used to it eventually.
Plus, I absolutely love the ending. I love that it didn’t just give us a good ending in the battlefield, but they also showed us Anos’ parents meeting his supposed “3rd wife”, wahahaha.
If you are planning to try this anime, be sure to look out for his parents, they are very entertaining, hahaha.
CHARACTERS
The main character is surprisingly likeable. Seeing that he’s the demon king, he was surprisingly nice. He is strong, but he doesn’t flaunt it in an annoying way and he respects the strengths of everyone. I’m just a bit distracted with his name though, hahaha. Sorry, I’m really such a pervert lol.
As for the side characters, I don’t think I have someone here that I detest. There may be some characters that hate Anos because they don’t believe him whenever he says that he’s the reincarnation of their demon king, but that isn’t enough to hate them. He has some really capable team members so the revelation of the other character really surprised me.
Aside from the main character, the screen time of his parents is one of my favorites. They just lighten the mood <3
And lastly, it’s just kinda hard to differentiate the demon between the humans because they all look the same hahaha. Or maybe I’m just missing something?
ANIMATION + ART
As usual, I don’t have any complaints here hahaha. I’m not very particular in this aspect of anime since I’m no expert, just as long as it looks good and the story is great, then you won’t hear me complaining,*wink.
VOICE ACTORS
I only watched this series in an English dub, so I can’t really differentiate. The voice of some characters could take time to get used to, but overall, I think it wasn’t that bad. I still enjoyed it right? *wink.
***
The Misfit of Demon King Academy isn’t as grand as the other anime out there, but I have to say that this is one of the few good new anime. If you want action but don’t want something heavy, then this one is definitely a great choice.
Have fun watching!
It’s about demons, so what’s not to like, right? 😛 Truly, this sounds like a good and interesting anime, one I should probably add to my list 😉 Always happy to read your recommendations, Vanessa!
Thanks Silvia, can’t wait to see how you’ll like this series hehehe
