Geeky Discussions: What Is Your “I Almost Died” Story?

It’s almost Halloween and we all know people love to hear horror stories during this season but I don’t have any personal horror stories I could share so I thought, why not share my “I almost died” story instead. It happened a decade ago but I can still remember that day so clearly in my head.

My “I Almost Died” Story

I was only a saphomore High School student when “it” happened. It was Black Saturday that day and together with some few other students, we were required to come to school to take our final exam in advance. Growing up, our elders used to warn us not to hangout during Holy Week as they believed that something bad will happen if you do. But even if we know that, we still agreed to hang out to one of our classmate’s place after finishing the exam so early. We’re basically done with school so I guess it wouldn’t hurt to chill out and have fun with friends once in a while. Also, it’s my classmate’s uncle birthday so which means there’s a lot of food!

I thought it’s going to be just an ordinary Saturday until the girls decided to visit this backwater which is known to be enchanted. Teenagers or most people are usually drawn to these kind of things so even if we’re all girls and I’m the only one who knows how to swim (and definitely not a good one), we decided to go.

This backwater is situated deep into the forest so there’s only few people who visits the place, and while we’re there, it’s only us girls and two other guys who’s one of the visitors of our classmate’s uncle. We didn’t really like the idea of these two “older” guys tagging along but what can we do?

Even with some unwanted companies, we still able to enjoy the cold water. All of us we’re goofing around until one of my classmate asked me to take her to the other side of the backwater. I’m the only one who knows how to swim (and actually not a good one) but seeing as the other side is only a few meters away, I then obliged. We were able to reach the other side but I was almost out of breath, so I thought I can still take her back if I rest for a while. But while going back, I..I dunno what happen, I just suddenly out of breath and my classmate was too heavy and she’s flailing like crazy making it hard for me to swim. I can feel her holding my waist while I was there trying to ask for help. Right when I almost want to give up, I felt a little lighter so even if I was so tired and almost drank the whole water already, I swam my heart out until I reached to the shallow part. I’m not really sure what I was thinking at that time, all I know is that I don’t want to die.

My other classmates flocked to me and asked if I was ok. After I’m done catching my breath and calming myself, I asked them what happened. And it turns out that one of those “unwanted” companies helped our butts. He didn’t know how to swim but he managed to find a way to rescue my classmate that’s why I was able swim back to the surface.

It was crazy because we were a bit nasty with them at first and it turns out that one of them is going to be our knight and shining armor that day. If we we’re more nastier to them and they ended up not coming along with us, I’m not sure what would have happened.

So yep, after that, we apologized for our previous behavior and thanked him for helping us. No one talked about the accident ever again.

Lessons Learned

The accident made me see what a nasty and judgmental b*tch I was. I guess it was because of that day that I started to act mature and got rid of my immature self. Ofcourse there’s still some left and I don’t think it’ll ever be gone but I am happy to say that I’m far from that 14 year old Vanessa anymore.

Another thing I learn is to never again take for granted our elder’s superstitious beliefs. Some of them may be a bit ludicrous but they wouldn’t be here if it’s not true or if it didn’t happen before eh? Besides, it’s good to be cautious once in a while especially if it involves our lives right?

What Happened After

I didn’t told anyone about what happened that day, even to my sister. If my grandparents will find out, I’m sure I’ll receive unending sermon and worst, a spank (haha, yep, I still getting some spanking even at the age of 14 lol). But two years after, my grandpa found out about it and all other dirty secrets I’ve been hiding. It strike me as unusual because no one knew except a few of my classmates who’s present that day, and he didn’t know any of them, well, excluding my bestfriend which I’m sure wouldn’t tell anyone. And it turns out my grandpa found my diary and read it. ALL of it! He wasn’t angry but he told me to never do it again and after that, he’s been teasing me for like 6 months about my previous boyfriends. Dang! That was really embarrassing. I guess that’s the reason why I never had diary again, lol.

I don’t like horror books or movies, either, but I can’t think of an almost died story. I’ve been able to do CPR rescue for a few people over the years and been in a few car accidents that didn’t hurt me much. It made me realize how close we all are to a bad accident happening to us.

few car accidents?! My! That’s terrifying Sophia Rose. But I’m glad you’re ok. I’ve had some few minor accidents before but wasn’t as bad and as close to dying like the one I share above.

I can’t begin to imagine how horrified you must have felt. Thank God it all worked out for the best.

I guess that’s what I will feel too if it happens to my kid (which hopefully not). I hope he/she will not be as stubborn as I was when I was a kid.

Hehe, it could be a perfect YA romance or thriller Karen 😉

Ohh, that sounds spooky Karen. I hope you can post it soon 🙂

Echoing what Karen said, that would make a pretty epic storyline. I’m so glad you made it through Vanessa. It’s amazing how frightening events throughout our lives help give us perspective on what’s more important. And we’re stronger for it <3
