Singapore to Malaysia in 8 Days: Complete Travel Guide & Expenses

Imagine sipping craft cocktails on a rooftop overlooking Singapore’s futuristic skyline one evening, and stepping into colorful, spice-scented heritage streets in Malaysia the next. Spanning two distinct neighboring countries in just eight days might sound fast-paced, but with the right route, it’s one of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding cross-border journeys. From iconic landmarks like the Supertree Grove and Petronas Towers to rich cultural pockets and world-famous street food, this practical 8-day Singapore and Malaysia itinerary (3 days in SG + 5 days in MY) will show you exactly how to maximize your time, cross the border seamlessly, and experience the best of both worlds without feeling rushed.

Singapore Travel Requirements

You’ll need a valid passport with at least six months validity, and a visa depending on your nationality and purpose of travel. But if you are a Philippine passport holder, a visa is not required for a short-term stay: 30 days. For more information about Singapore visas,  you can read here.

All travellers entering Singapore are required to submit their Singapore Arrival Card before arriving in Singapore, except:

  • Those transiting/transferring through Singapore without seeking immigration clearance; and
  • Residents travelling through the land checkpoints.

For more information, please refer to Singapore’s entry requirements.

Best Time to Visit Singapore

Singapore is a year round destination. However, the “best” time to visit depends on your priorities regarding weather, budget, events, or avoiding crowds.

  1. Best Weather (February to April) – Drier, slightly lower humidity, and maximum sunshine.
  2. Best for Budget & Fewer Crowds (August to October) – Warm with occasional afternoon showers.
  3. Best for Shopping & Food Festivals (June to July) – Hot and humid with short tropical downpours.
  4. Best for Festive Vibes & Lights (November to January) – Wet season (Northeast Monsoon) with longer, heavier downpours.

We visited Singapore the last week of June to the first week of July and it was a surprisingly dry visit. It was hot but tolerable. For our 3 day stay there, we only had very short raindrops so it really didn’t hinder our itinerary.

Singapore Travel Essentials

  • Singapore travel adaptor – Singapore uses the Type G plug standard. This is the same three-pin plug system used in the UK, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Ireland.
    • Key Electrical Specs
      • Plug Type: Type G (3 rectangular prongs arranged in a triangle).
      • Voltage: 230V.
      • Frequency: 50 Hz.
  • Singapore internet/data connection – you can choose from the following options:
    • Singapore sim card – I recommend opting for this one if you are only traveling alone or two to minimize cost. You can book in advance via Klook or any 7/11 or convenience store upon arrival at the airport.
    • E-sim
    • Pocket wifi – if you are traveling in a group, I recommend opting for this one. You can get one from Klook or directly at the airport.
  • Singapore Travel Card – you don’t necessarily need a specific physical travel card anymore. You can pay for public transport (MRT, LRT, and buses) in Singapore using three main options:
    • Contactless Bank Card / Mobile Wallet (Easiest) – through Singapore’s SimplyGo system, you can tap directly in and out at transport gantries using your foreign credit/debit card or mobile phone:
      • Accepted: Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Pay.
      • Best For: Short trips or ultimate convenience, since you skip all ticket lines and don’t need to buy a physical card.
      • Note: A small administrative fee (approx. SGD0.60/day) applies for foreign-issued cards.
    • EZ-Link Card (Best for Longer Stays) – is Singapore’s traditional reusable, stored-value transit smartcard.
      • Cost: S$10 (includes SGD5 usable credit + SGD5 non-refundable card cost).
      • Where to Buy: Any MRT station Passenger Service Centre, 7-Eleven, or Cheers convenience store.
      • Best For: Travelers staying longer than a week or anyone who wants to avoid foreign card admin fees.
    • Singapore Tourist Pass (Best for Heavy Sightseeing) – a special type of EZ-Link card that offers unlimited rides on basic buses and MRT/LRT trains for a fixed duration:
      • Pricing:
        • 1-Day Pass: ~SGD17
        • 2-Day Pass: ~SGD24
        • 3-Day Pass: ~SGD29
      • Where to Buy: SimplyGo Ticket Offices at major MRT stations (e.g., Changi Airport, Orchard, City Hall). You can also get it online like Klook, Agoda, etc.
      • Best For: Packed itineraries where you plan on taking more than 4–5 rides a day.
  • Hand-held Fan, Caps, Umbrella, Water, Sunscreen or anything that could fight the hot weather – Singapore is a tropical country and whether you travel during rainy or sunny season, I still recommend having the items mentioned above.

Currency Used in Singapore

The official currency of Singapore is the Singapore Dollar (symbol: S$, currency code: SGD).

  • Cash vs. Card: Singapore is overwhelmingly cashless. Credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Wallet are accepted almost everywhere—including retail stores, restaurants, taxis, and public transport (MRT and buses).
  • When You Need Cash: It’s handy to keep a small amount of physical cash (around S$20–S$50) for traditional hawker centers (food courts), small neighborhood stalls, or wet markets where card processing might not be set up.

Where to Stay in Singapore

Singapore is compact and extremely well-connected by its public transit system (MRT), but hotel prices vary significantly depending on the neighborhood.

  • Best Overall Base – Bugis / Kampong Glam or Chinatown
  • Budget Backpackers – Little India
  • Luxury & Romantic Trips – Marina Bay
  • Shopping & Big Families – Orchard Road
  • Resort / Theme Park Vacation – Sentosa Island

During our stay, we booked at Fragrance Hotel – Balestier since it’s one of the few hotels that offers 3 pax per room and was within our budget range. It wasn’t near train stations but was just 2-3 minutes away from the nearest bus stop. There’s also a lot of convenience stores nearby so it’s still a win for us.

Getting Around  Singapore

Getting around Singapore is exceptionally easy, safe, and efficient. Because the island is compact, you can reach almost any attraction in under 30 minutes.

Here is a breakdown of your best options, ranked by convenience.

  1. The Train System (MRT / LRT) – the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is the fastest and most popular way to navigate the city. It is fully air-conditioned, spotlessly clean, and operates from roughly 5:30 AM to midnight daily.
    • How to Pay: Just tap your contactless credit/debit card (Visa or Mastercard) or mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Wallet) at the gantry gates. There is no need to buy a separate ticket unless you prefer a stored-value EZ-Link card.
    • Coverage: Connects Changi Airport directly to major tourist hubs like Marina Bay, Orchard Road, Chinatown, and Bugis.
    • Frequency: Trains run every 2 to 5 minutes during peak hours.
  2. Public Buses – Singapore’s bus network reaches every corner of the island, including scenic routes and residential areas where train tracks don’t go.
    • How to Pay: Same as the MRT—tap your contactless card or phone on the reader at the front door when boarding, and tap out at the rear door when alighting.
  3. Ride-Hailing & Taxis – Taxis and ride-hailing cars are affordable compared to major Western cities, making them a great option late at night or when traveling in a small group.
    • Primary Apps: Download Grab, Gojek, TADA, or Ryde before arriving. Grab is the dominant app in Southeast Asia.
    • Street Taxis: You can hail regular taxis at designated taxi stands outside malls and hotels. All street taxis operate strictly on meters.
    • Note: Surcharges apply during peak commuting hours, midnight hours (50% markup), and pickups from Changi Airport or the Marina Bay area.
  4. Walking – Singapore is a very walkable city with wide sidewalks, underground air-conditioned pedestrian links (especially under Orchard Road and City Hall), and covered walkways (sheltered shophouse “five-foot ways”) that protect you from sudden tropical rain showers or midday heat.
  5. Getting to Sentosa Island – If you are visiting Universal Studios Singapore or the beach clubs, you must cross over from the main island to Sentosa via HarbourFront MRT station:
    • Sentosa Express (Monorail): Located on Level 3 of VivoCity mall (HarbourFront MRT).
    • Sentosa Boarding Walk: A pleasant, covered walking track with travelators from VivoCity to Sentosa (Free entry).
    • Cable Car: A scenic, elevated option running from Mount Faber / HarbourFront directly into Sentosa.

Pro-Tips for Navigating

  1. Use Navigation Apps: Google Maps and Citymapper work flawlessly in Singapore with real-time train and bus arrival times.
  2. Mind the Rules: No eating or drinking (including water) is allowed on trains, buses, or inside MRT stations.
  3. Escalator Etiquette: Stand on the left side of escalators; keep the right side clear for people walking up.

Crossing Border from Singapore to Malaysia by Express Bus

Crossing the land border from Singapore into Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia, is one of the easiest ways to start a multi-country trip. Whether you are taking a bus or driving, here is everything you need to know for a seamless crossing.

  1. Important Requirements Before You Go

Before heading to the border, make sure you have these essentials ready:

  • Passport – at least 6 months of validity remaining
  • Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) – all travellers must fill out the online MDAC form within 3 days before entry. (Note: Singapore passport holders are exempt)
  • SG Arrival Card – required when returning back to Singapore (submit online via the ICA website up to 3 days before entry).
  • Bus Ticket Bookings – book long-distance coaches via platforms like BusOnlineTicket or Easybook to secure your seats.
  1. Choosing Your Bus Route
  • Option A: Local Bus to Johor Bahru (JB), Then Express Bus to KL
    • Duration: ~4.5–6 hours | Cost: ~MYR 35–MYR 45 (SGD10–SGD13)
    • Best for budget travelers wanting maximum flexibility and lower ticket prices.
  1. Take a local cross-border bus to JB Sentral – board a Causeway Link (CW1/CW2) or SBS Bus 170 from Singapore (Kranji or Queen Street) to Woodlands Checkpoint.
  2. Clear Immigration – disembark to clear Singapore immigration, reboard the bus across the Causeway bridge, and clear Malaysian immigration at Sultan Iskandar CIQ (JB Sentral).
  3. Head to Larkin Sentral Bus Terminal – from JB Sentral, take a short local bus (myBAS T10, T11) or Grab ride (~10–15 mins) to Larkin Sentral, JB’s primary intercity bus terminal.
  4. Board your express bus to KL –  take your pre-booked long-distance coach (popular operators: KKKL Express, Causeway Link, LA Holidays).
  5. Arrival in KL – buses depart hourly and arrive at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur (~4 to 4.5 hours drive). From TBS, jump on the LRT or KLIA Transit line directly into downtown KL.
  • Option B: Direct Express Bus (Singapore Straight to KL)
    • Duration: ~5–6.5 hours (incl. border stops) | Cost: ~SGD30–SGD45
    • Best for travelers who want a seamless journey without transferring between local buses and terminals.
  1. Board at a convenient Singapore pick-up spot – pick-up points are located across Singapore, including Boon Lay, Bugis, Kovan, or Golden Mile Tower (popular operators: KKKL, Aeroline, StarMart).
  2. Singapore Border Clearance – the bus drops you off at Woodlands Checkpoint. Unload your daypacks, scan out at automated gates, and reboard your exact coach on the other side.
  3. Malaysia Border Clearance – drive across the bridge to Johor Bahru CIQ. Bring all of your luggage off the bus for customs scanning and passport entry checks.
  4. Non-stop drive to KL –  once everyone reboards, the coach takes the North-South Expressway straight to Kuala Lumpur.
  5. Arrival in KL – disembark at TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) or direct hotel drop-offs like Berjaya Times Square / KL Sentral depending on your bus booking.

💡 Pro Tips for a Smooth Bus Journey

  • Avoid Peak Weekend Jams – the Singapore-JB Causeway gets extremely congested on Friday evenings (5 PM – 10 PM) and Saturday mornings (8 AM – 12 PM). Traveling mid-morning on a weekday ensures a much faster border clearance.
  • Keep Bus Details Handy – during border checks for Option B, note down your bus plate number and coach color so you don’t accidentally board the wrong bus after clearing immigration!
  • Pack a Jacket – Malaysian express buses are notorious for blasting cold air conditioning during the 4+ hour highway drive!

My Personal Travel Trip Before You Explore Singapore

  • Singapore  is a tropical country, so make sure to always bring water, a hand-held fan or just an ordinary fan, a towel or a handkerchief, a cap or umbrella to relieve you of the hot weather.
  • Rain can happen any day of the year in Singapore, so always carry a light umbrella or raincoat regardless of when you travel.
  • Many modern hotels in Singapore feature multi-standard outlets or built-in USB charging ports, but having your own Type G adapter ensures you can plug in anywhere—including airport lounges, cafes, and older hotels.
  • If you are going to follow my itinerary below, make sure to wear comfortable footwear since it will involve a lot of walking.
  • Before your trip, make sure you purchase Alaxan fr and take it every night before going to bed after the whole day of exploring. I guarantee that you will not have any body pains the next day, *wink.
  • For card use either for withdrawal or purchases, I recommend using a Maribank card because their exchange rate is better than our local bank card.
  • Rides are distance-based and relatively cheap in Singapore (usually SGD1.10 to SGD2.50 per trip). Unless you are constantly hopping on and off trains, tapping your foreign contactless bank card or phone directly is usually the most convenient option.
  • I recommend that you have WhatsApp already installed to your phone since that is most probably used by the group tour (if you followed my itinerary below) and the bus company going to Malaysia.
  • Make sure to dress appropriately when visiting a temple. That means no legs and shoulders exposed. If you are wearing one, I recommend bringing a big scarf or sarong with you.
  • If you are going to Singapore Botanic Garden with friends, I recommend you go for ride-hailing cars (like Grab) to Tanglin Gate or Tyersall Gate to avoid a 20-minute walk from the north entrance.
  • For the entrance fees and tours, I booked on Klook, Agoda and Trip. I just searched which one is cheaper, lol.
  • If you are going to Fort Canning Tree Tunnel, I recommend going there early in the morning as there are really a lot of tourists going there specifically for that spot.
  • If you want to go to CapitaSpring sky garden for free, make sure to make a reservation two weeks in advance.
  • If you are going to follow our sample itinerary below, make sure to download CapitaStar app, then create an account (make sure you have an SG number to create an account), then from there you can see a QR code under your account which you will be using to access Funnan Mall’s free shower. Bring your own towel and toiletries. Tip: Bring disposable towel and the free soaps/shampoo from your hotel so wouldn’t be bringing a lot of stuffs.
  • Purchase water in the grocery store (FairPrice), rather than the convenience store to save money.
  • They don’t have free bags when you shop (unless you are in street markets), so make sure to have an eco bag or any bag with you to put your orders in when grocery shopping. You can also purchase a bag directly there.
  • If you’re on a budget, I recommend riding a bus in the evening going to Malaysia so you’ll only be sleeping while traveling. I recommend the KKKL bus, just book directly to their website so you’ll get a discount as a new user.
  • Don’t forget to complete the Malaysian Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within 3 days before arrival in Malaysia.
  • Singapore is overwhelmingly cashless. So only withdraw small amounts around SGD20-50 for emergencies. If you are using Maribank or gcash, I recommend withdrawing at any UOB atms.

Above is only a sample itinerary that we followed during our trip, and it catered to our interests and energy capacity. We also didn’t enter the USS because there were some rides that were  under maintenance during our trip, so we decided to just take a picture outside and explore the island instead. So feel free to make your own update!

Expenses

Please note that I didn’t add any personal expenses, such as food and souvenirs. This computation is good for 1 person, 3pax traveling together.

Our per meal budget in Singapore was SGD10-15 per meal. If you want a budget friendly meal, I recommend dining at Hawkers. While in Malaysia, our budget per meal was not more than MYR 15, it could be lower if you dine at any street market food stalls. Unfortunately, for this trip, we weren’t able to try one 🙁

To have an idea, I had Php 15,000 pocket money which was already more than enough (actually, I only used up around 13k+ for this whole trip, *wink) for the meals, bus/train/grab fares, pasalubongs, and other personal expenses. I used a Maribank card during this whole trip.

*Expenses is calculated in Philippine peso, unless specified.
